The serve is the most important shot in tennis. It's the only shot where you have complete control, and a powerful serve can be a massive weapon. But how do you actually increase your serve speed?
Understanding Serve Mechanics
Before diving into exercises, it's crucial to understand that serve power comes from the kinetic chain—energy transfers from your legs, through your core, into your arm, and finally into the racket. Any weakness in this chain limits your potential.
1. Medicine Ball Rotational Throws
This exercise directly mimics the rotational power needed for a powerful serve. Stand sideways to a wall, rotate your hips and shoulders explosively, and throw the ball into the wall.
Sets/Reps: 3 sets of 10 throws each side
2. Single-Leg Romanian Deadlifts
Balance and leg strength are foundational to serve power. This exercise builds the posterior chain while improving stability on your toss leg.
Sets/Reps: 3 sets of 8-10 each leg
3. Cable External Rotations
Shoulder health and rotational strength are critical. External rotations build the decelerator muscles that protect your shoulder while improving power output.
Sets/Reps: 3 sets of 15 each arm
4. Plyo Push-ups
Explosive upper body power translates directly to racket head speed. Plyo push-ups train your chest and triceps to generate quick, powerful movements.
Sets/Reps: 3 sets of 8-10
5. Lateral Bounds
The leg drive in a serve starts with explosive lateral power. Lateral bounds build the specific strength needed for a powerful trophy position.
Sets/Reps: 3 sets of 6 each direction
Implementation
Incorporate these exercises 2-3 times per week, allowing 48 hours between sessions. Within 8-12 weeks of consistent training, you should see measurable improvements in your serve speed.
